In English, we will be exploring the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. The children will develop their reading, speaking and writing skills by learning to retell the story, exploring the characters and events, and using rich vocabulary to describe what happens. They will then use their knowledge of the text to plan and write their own version of the story, applying their phonics, spelling and sentence-writing skills independently.
In Maths, we will begin by learning about position and direction, using mathematical language to describe movement and turns. We will then move on to place value within 100, developing our understanding of tens and ones and comparing and ordering numbers. Later in the term, we will explore measurements, focusing on money and time, where the children will learn to recognise coins and notes, count money, and tell the time to the hour and half past the hour. Through practical activities and problem-solving, the children will continue to build their confidence and fluency in mathematics.
Our topic in Science is Seasonal Change. Throughout the year, the children have been observing the weather and seasonal changes around them. In this final topic, they will bring together all of their observations and learning to explore how the four seasons affect weather patterns, plants, animals and daylight hours. The children will continue to develop their scientific observation skills through discussion, comparison and investigation.
Our topic in Design and Technology is Puppets. The children will explore different types of puppets and investigate how they are designed and made. They will develop their cutting, joining and decorating skills while designing and creating their own puppet. The children will then evaluate their finished product, considering what worked well and how they could improve their design.
Our History topic is Seaside: Past and Present. The children will learn about how seaside holidays have changed over time and compare beaches and seaside experiences from the past with those of today. They will explore photographs and artefacts to help them understand these changes and will deepen their learning during our trip to the beach, where they will observe and discuss features of the seaside firsthand.
This half term in Music, the children will be revisiting and celebrating the learning they have completed throughout Year 1. Through singing, listening, playing instruments, improvising and performing, they will reflect on the musical skills and knowledge they have developed over the year. The children will build their confidence as musicians and enjoy working together to perform and share their learning with others.
In RE, the children will be exploring the topic Creation. They will learn about the Christian creation story and reflect on the world around them, considering the many things that Christians believe God created. Through stories, discussions and creative activities, the children will have opportunities to share their own thoughts about the natural world and explore why creation is important to many people of faith.
In Computing, the children will be developing their coding skills using Purple Mash. They will learn how to create and follow simple programmes, use algorithms to make things happen on screen, and begin to debug their work by finding and fixing mistakes. Through a range of fun and engaging activities, the children will build their confidence in using technology and develop their problem-solving and logical thinking skills.
This half term, the children will be exploring the SCARF unit Growing and Changing. They will learn about how people change as they grow, including the ways they have changed since they were babies and the skills they can now do independently. The children will also explore similarities and differences between people, discuss how to stay safe and healthy, and develop their understanding of feelings, relationships and personal growth through a range of age-appropriate activities and discussions.
PE lessons will continue to take place on Wednesdays. In PE, the children will be developing their ball skills through games that focus on kicking and dribbling. They will practise controlling a ball with increasing confidence, improving their coordination, balance and teamwork skills through a range of fun activities and games. The children will also be preparing for Sports Day, where they will take part in a variety of athletic events, developing their resilience, determination and enjoyment of physical activity.
Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit every Wednesday. For health and safety reasons, earrings should be removed before PE. If your child is unable to remove their earrings independently, please ensure they are covered with plasters before coming to school.
