Intent

At Intack, to ensure that all of our children see the purpose for writing and become the most confident, skilled and enthusiastic writers they can be, we strive:

  • To develop learners' abilities within an integrated programme of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is delivered using adaptive teaching to recognise the varied needs of our children, allowing all children to make progress.
  • To provide a robust curriculum that builds on prior learning and develops mastery of writing skills.
  • To provide opportunities for children to be immersed in a range of texts, both narrative and non-fiction, to enable them to acquire an understanding of a range of text types and genres
  • To place oracy at the heart of our teaching and learning approaches for writing through performing stories, analysing texts through drama-focused activities, articulating their ideas orally before writing and acquiring, rehearsing and applying a wide range of vocabulary that is captured through a range of texts.
  • For our children to have an interest in vocabulary and the confidence to explore word meanings  to develop a growing vocabulary in both spoken and written forms.
  • To build children’s narrative and non-narrative storehouse through learning texts, or extracts from texts, off by heart and performing them.
  • To explicitly teach children how to read as a reader and read as a writer for a range of different purposes
  • To provide sufficient time for children to gather and orally rehearse ideas for writing using a collaborative approach, allowing children to innovate known stories and to invent their own stories.
  • To scaffold the writing process through modelling the acts of a writer.
  • To provide children with the opportunities to write stories and non-fiction texts independently using known stimuli and ideas that have been gathered using a collaborative approach.
  • To explicitly teach children how to proofread and edit their own writing, orchestrating a range of independent strategies to self-monitor and correct.
  • To provide varied opportunities for children to read and write for a wide range of audiences and purposes with confidence, fluency and understanding.
  • To provide opportunities for children to interrelate the requirements of English within a broad and balanced approach to the teaching of English across the curriculum with opportunities to consolidate and reinforce taught English skills
  • To equip children with the writing skills to flourish across the whole curriculum and life beyond primary education.

We strive for our pupils to be a 'Primary Literate Learner'.
