As a result of our intent and implementation statements, we strive for children to have an increased understanding of spelling patterns, detailed phonetic knowledge and a range of strategies to practise and learn common exception words, enabling our pupils to become more confident writers.

Consistency and fidelity to our chosen phonics and spelling programmes, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds and Red Rose Spelling, from EYFS through to Y6, ensures that our pupils develop a solid understanding throughout school. Newer pupils who arrive mid-year are supported to catch up through Little Wandle Rapid Catch Up phonics and IDL interventions.

By the end of KS2, children will:

• be able to spell most, if not all, high frequency and common exception words outlined in the National Curriculum
• have developed and be able to apply strategies to support them with spelling tricker words
• have developed word meanings for a growing number of words in the English language
• have learnt many spelling rules and patterns and can apply them accurately in almost all of their writing
• be able to use morphology to support them with spelling

Our pupils’ stronger spelling skills support them to be confident writers, which ultimately contributes to improved academic achievement and more confidence in all written tasks throughout their lives.
