  • 🌍❤️ Learning About Windrush ❤️🌍

This week we have been busy learning all about the ‘Windrush’. The children have been enthusiastic about sharing what they have learnt about the ‘Windrush’ and ‘Floella Benjamin’.

We have retold the story of the ‘Windrush’ using props in a tuff tray. We can explain that the Windrush was about black Caribbean people moving over to Britain for jobs, including driving buses, working in hospitals and building houses. We also learnt that the black Caribbean came over to England to help rebuild their country after the war. We learnt that when the black Caribbean people arrived in England, they were not treated kindly. However, over time things got better.

We also learnt lots about Floella Benjamin. We found out that she came from an island called Trinidad, and she moved to Britain on the HMT Empire Windrush.

We have enjoyed making flags for some of the Caribbean islands, Britain and England. We used tissue paper, paint, peg boards and crayons to make our own flags.

We also enjoyed making a Caribbean island out of different materials, including paper plates, toilet roll tubes, paper, tissue paper and paint. We joined the different parts of the island together using a glue gun with an adult.
