Implement

Computing at Intack Primary School – Implementation

The Computing curriculum is taught using the Purple Mash Scheme of Work, which is sequenced to ensure knowledge and skills are revisited, deepened and secured over time.

  • Planning is structured around the three strands of computing:

    1. Computer Science – taught through Purple Mash units such as 2Code, Simulations, Branching Databases, Text Adventures, Binary, and Networks.

    2. Information Technology – delivered through units including 2Paint, 2Publish, 2Create a Story, 2Calculate (spreadsheets), 2Investigate (databases), 3D Modelling, Quizzing and Game Creator.

    3. Digital Literacy – embedded in Online Safety, Blogging, Email, and Effective Searching.

  • Progression maps within Purple Mash ensure systematic skill development. For example:

    • EYFS/KS1: simple sequencing (Bee-Bots, basic 2Code).

    • LKS2: loops, conditionals and debugging (2Code repetition and selection).

    • UKS2: variables, abstraction, and networks (advanced 2Code, Binary, Networks).

  • Inclusivity is embedded: Purple Mash provides scaffolding, differentiated challenges, and unplugged approaches to ensure all learners can succeed.

  • Teachers combine explicit instruction, practical exploration and cross-curricular application. Purple Mash supports this with units that link computing to other subjects (e.g. 2Calculate for maths, 2Animate for literacy, 2Investigate for science).

  • Online safety is taught explicitly at the start of every term using Purple Mash’s dedicated Online Safety units and is reinforced through PSHE, assemblies and events such as Safer Internet Day.

  • Assessment is ongoing: Purple Mash provides end-of-unit quizzes, self-assessment opportunities, and digital portfolios, alongside teacher observations and pupil voice. Outcomes are used to track progression and inform planning.

  • Teachers are supported by CPD and Purple Mash’s teacher resources, including unit guides, knowledge organisers and assessment tools, ensuring confident, consistent delivery.

  • In EYFS, Computing is taught through the “Knowledge and understanding of the world” part of the EYFS framework: - “Technology: children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes.”  Children will access technology during continuous provision.

  • Pupils also have access to iPads for other areas of the curriculum, such as researching facts about safari animals within science lessons. iPads are also used for the Accelerated Reading program and IDL.
