Implementation

At Intack Primary School, every class follows the PSHE Jigsaw Scheme of Work and SCARF (CORAM Life Education) and through this curriculum, we cover the National Curriculum guidance for PSHE.  we have a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.

The curriculum for PSHE is delivered throughout the whole school starting with a shared assembly each half term to introduce new topics.  Learning in each topic then takes place during weekly whole class lessons which explore the different themes. These themes are also embedded through all other lessons and the whole school day with everyone supporting and encouraging the children they interact with to use the skills they are developing and to make links to other areas of learning.

The aims of PSHE hope to provide children with:

- accurate and relevant knowledge

- opportunities to create personal understanding

- opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities

- a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life

Our PSHE programme deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold.  It helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings.  Children at Intack also acquire an understanding and experiences of British values that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect others, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen.

In addition to this, PSHE is also taught within other subject areas and as part of the creative curriculum through class topics and Science.  PSHE will also be addressed on a daily basis as questions and incidents arise.  At times, teachers may choose to hold a circle-time sessions in response to a particular event or issue.

Whole school and Key Stage assemblies will provide extra opportunities to enhance pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, promoting our school’s values and celebrating achievement. We also fully incorporate the RSE policy into our PSHE scheme and make sure our scheme of work links to British Values, Cultural Capital and SMSC.

Scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum

Our PSHE curriculum has core learning themes: Families and people who care for me, Health and Wellbeing, Respectful Relationships, Caring Friendships, Online relationships, Being Safe and Living in the wider world.  It also incorporates the RSE policy and identifies links to British Values, Cultural Capital, SMSC into the curriculum.

Activities are planned according to the different levels of children’s skills and previous knowledge.   A range of teaching strategies and learning styles will be used in delivering this policy with an emphasis placed on active learning. Pupils are supported in applying the skills they are learning, in real-life situations as they arise: e.g. resolving conflicts; working a part of a group on a project.

These will include but not exclusive to:
· Circle time and class discussion
· Role-play and drama
· Visits and visitors when appropriate
· Group work

Children will learn a range of skills (see skills progression table below) based on the following areas:

· Being Me In My World
· Celebrating Difference
· Dreams and Goals
· Healthy Me
· Relationships
· Changing Me

The teaching and learning of RSE is planned explicitly within each year group so that children know more, remember more and understand more. At Intack Primary School we aim for children to become more aware of RSE and know the purpose of it. Parents are invited to attend meetings related to the teaching of RSE and are welcome to contact the school for further support and clarification as required.  Please see our policy for further information.
