New Writing Intent Jan 2025
At Intack, to ensure that all of our children see the purpose for writing and become the most confident, skilled and enthusiastic writers they can be, we strive:
- To provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is delivered using adaptive teaching to recognise the varied needs of our children, allowing all children to make progress.
- To provide a robust curriculum that builds on prior learning and develops mastery of writing skills.
- To provide opportunities for children to be immersed in a range of texts, both narrative and non-fiction.
- To place oracy at the heart of our teaching and learning approaches for writing through performing stories, articulating their ideas orally before writing and acquiring a wide range of vocabulary that is captured through a range of texts.
- To build children’s narrative and non-narrative storehouse through learning texts off by heart and performing them.
- To explicitly teach children how to read as a reader and read as a writer.
- To provide sufficient time for children to gather and orally rehearse ideas for writing using a collaborative approach, allowing children to innovate known stories and to invent their own stories.
- To scaffold the writing process through modelling the acts of a writer.
- To provide children with the opportunities to write stories and non-fiction texts independently using known stimuli and ideas that have been gathered using a collaborative approach.
- To explicitly teach children how to proofread and edit their own writing.
- To provide varied opportunities for children to write for a wide range of audiences and purposes.
- To equip children with the writing skills to flourish across the whole curriculum and life beyond primary education.
